Sermon series, April – June 2016:
Philippians 1:1-11 – God at work in you
This letter is full of joy. Even in the midst of suffering, Paul is able to rejoice because he sees God at work in these people. (Neville Reid, 17 April 2016)
Philippians 1:12-26 – Christ is all that matters
Paul does not go into detail about his own hardships, but opens his heart about what really matters to him. (Neville Reid, 24 April 2016)
Philippians 1:27-30 – Live worthy of the gospel
Paul strongly urges his friends to live a life worthy of the gospel, and starts to unpack what that looks like. (Neville Reid, 1 May 2016)
Philippians 2:1-4 – Christian unity
What does it mean for Christians to be one? (Erik Pattison, 8 May 2016)
Philippians 2:5-11 – Serving like Jesus
What does it mean for Christians to be one? (Erik Pattison, 15 May 2016)
Philippians 2 – How real humility works
Not mainly self-effacing or deprecating. Not weak or evasive. Rather a genuine acting out of concern for Christ and other people. Here we learn that "Friendship has legs" and that humility can be assertive, active, lively and free from both egotism and egoism. (Erik Pattison, 22 May 2016)
Philippians 3:1-11 – Knowing Jesus beats everything
We can't match the apostle Paul for having a head start in religious life, but he tells us it was all junk compared to knowing Jesus. (Neville Reid, 29 May 2016)
Philippians 3:12-16 – Which way are you moving?
What matters most is not where you are, but which way are you heading. (Neville Reid, 5 June 2016)
Philippians 3:17-4:1 – Who are you copying?
There are two ways to live: centred on Jesus, or on ourselves. In the second case we may go to any extreme – being driven by our own religious performance, or by our own appetites – but unless Jesus is truly the centre of our lives, we are headed for destruction. (Neville Reid, 12 June 2016)
Philippians 4:2-9 – The battle for your mind
How we think is a spiritual matter. What is at stake? Peace in the church, inner peace & joy, and actions in harmony with our beliefs. (Neville Reid, 19 June 2016)
Philippians 4:10-23 – Joy in hard times
Joy is the mood of this whole letter. How is this possible, in such truly hard times for both the writer and the people receiving his words? (Neville Reid, 26 June 2016)
Two other talks on this letter:
Philippians 1:1-6 Recap – Reasons for Joy
Three things that were a foundation for joy in Paul's life, but which we can easily miss. (Neville Reid, 14 August 2016)
Philippians 3: The Resurrection and our future
How the resurrection changes everything. Jesus will make all things new. (Erik Pattison, 2012}.
